You Were Gone
You were gone
like a fly lighting
on that wall
with a spider in the corner.
You were gone
like last week’s paycheck
for this week’s bills.
You were gone
like the years between
twenty-five and thirty.
As if somehow,
you never existed
and if it wouldn’t be
for the gray hairs
I’d never know that
You had come.
like a fly lighting
on that wall
with a spider in the corner.
You were gone
like last week’s paycheck
for this week’s bills.
You were gone
like the years between
twenty-five and thirty.
As if somehow,
you never existed
and if it wouldn’t be
for the gray hairs
I’d never know that
You had come.
Poem Analysis
This poem was also written based on one of Giovanni’s personal experiences. It’s basically a poem with sadness, and loneliness. The main idea of this poem is basically just her describing to the reader how her companion had once left her.
The literary term used in this free-verse poem is a smilie. A simile is simply a comparison between two unrelated things. For example; “You were gone like a fly lighting on that wall with a spider in the corner.” She’s talking about how her companion left her, though she ties it in with a fly on a wall accompanied by a spider. Meaning, somewhat instantly.
This poem also uses a bit of connotation. Connotation is when the intended meaning isn’t stated clearly, and instead is conveyed through indirect means. For example; by “...And if it wouldn’t be for the gray hairs I’d never know that you had come.” What that means is that the gray hair (sign of stress) was caused by the companion’s absence, otherwise apparently, she found no other changes in her life without him.
