Why should we learn more about her in the IBMYP Curriculum?
The IB Mission Statement; Communicator
In the IBMYP, we want the students to be able to look up to an inspiring, and leading role model. Nikki Giovanni is an excellent example of a well educated, caring, and open-minded personality. She was a very confident and out-spoken personality and because of her endless courage, she was a great support and broad voice for the Black Community. Learning about her would be a vivid source of inspiration as to how much of a difference a single voice can cause.
She was always an inquirer as she always dug deep into issues of the society and tried to assist as well as possible. She was a very outspoken and passionate women about racial discrimination, hate-motivated violence and gender issues. She used her lectures and writing pieces to fight a war against racial discrimination, and for civil rights, and equality. Because of her race and gender, she got put down many times, but still carried on doing in what she believed, besides being a cancer survivor. That characteristic would be something common students lack, and are likely to learn from Giovanni's example.
Giovanni was known to fearlessly defend her people, and be very open-minded to everyone's thoughts. Unlike a cowardly and scared women of the time, Giovanni took sudden actions again any type of injustice, because she did what she thought was correct and never gave up on herself.
As the IB Mission Statement speaks of teaching a student to create a better and more peaceful world, I think that Nikki Giovanni would be a great example and role model to look forward to, as she did create a huge change in the Black society and help a lot away from racial, and gender issues by showing endless courage. The importance of being a well communicated person will be taught and practically shown to the IB students.
An example of Nikki Giovanni and how she managed to keep belief in herself would surely be a good role model for them to look up at.
Not caring for her own self or the consequences she would have to face, Giovanni was knowledgeable, therefore confident in voicing her honest thoughts about things—something many aren't confident in doing. This would be a great inspiration to young children and teens of the IBMYP. They'll learn that it's not always about themselves, but about others too. Moreover, the significance of clearly stating or communicating one's thoughts will be taught. Sacrifice, respect, and confidence will be built inside the student after learning more about the great role model, Nikki Giovanni.
Areas of Interaction
As human ingenuity is a large part of the IBMYP Areas of Interaction, it is important that this poet has something to do with this topic in order to be eligible to be taught about, in the IBMYP Curriculum.
As so, Nikki Giovanni held great belief in how much power a single individual holds in themselves and how much potential they have to make a difference. She wrote poems, gave lectures and performed other unique ways of communicating to young people that their opinions and potentials can make a difference. Giovanni used many creative ways of communicating her thoughts to people; so human creativity will also be displayed. I think so that this should create an affect and impression on young IBMYP students and persuade them to explore subjects out of the school territories; to apply what the learn outside of school, but for a wider, larger reason, like Giovanni did. She always stressed on how one person can make a strong influence on others, and together, a great difference could be formed. Giovanni's love for individual power was what made her fearless in stating honest thoughts without hesitations.
To help the Black Community, she used to work in community places to aid the Black families who were in need and trouble at the time. Something we want young IBMYP students to do in the modern world. Lastly, her open love and hunger for learning was what made her so successful in life. And overall, all these characteristics are what make Nikki Giovanni so inspirational.
