The World Is Not A Pleasant Place To Be

Picture
The world is not a pleasant place
to be without
someone to hold and be held by.

A river would stop
its flow if only
a stream were there

to receive it.

An ocean would never laugh
if clouds weren't there
to kiss her tears.

The world is
not a pleasant place to be without
someone.

Poem Analysis

This poem is basically built upon a anthropomorphic structure. Anthropomorphism is when human attributes or actions are given to non-human objects. The entire poem revolves around anthropomorphism, which describes the message of the poem. For example; “An ocean would never laugh if clouds weren't there to kiss her tears.” Laughing is a human attribute, and originally speaking, oceans cannot laugh. Though in this case, a human attribute (laughing) is given to a non-human being (ocean). In that same verse, anthropomorphism occurs again. “...if clouds weren't there to kiss her tears.” Literally, clouds do not hold the ability to kiss, which is a human attribute. But in this case, it’s given to the non-human object to make the poem more understandable, interesting & appealing. The title basically gives away the main idea of the poem, that the author thinks the world isn't a pleasant place to be without someone. Since Giovanni at the time was going through hardships with her own relationships, the poem says how a companion is needed to survive through the difficult times of life.
